'Be Eco Chic' fashion show at the NY Fashion week
The fashion industry has not particularly been associated with being eco friendly. Neither has it been known so far to be committed to the environment. So far the industry on the whole has not made significant advances towards initiatives that encourage recycling or sustainable fabrics. But things were different at the NY Fashion week during which the 'Be Eco Chic' fashion show was hosted with great panache. Another unique aspect about this show was that it was hosted at the American Museum of Natural History, which has been associated with more scientific pursuits and has attracted scientists rather than fashion experts and divas.
The fashion show, for once also concentrated more on the various aspects of green fashion rather than just showcasing popular actors and actresses and models. Starting from a host from Discovery Planet (Angela Lindvall of Alter Ego fame) to demonstrations on how fashion clothing and accessories can be sustainable, green and organic and a menagerie of fashionable, impressive and yet green designs were the hallmark of the evening.
While celebrities contributed by adorning environmentally friendly fabrics and attires, the designers took this opportunity to showcase how green fashion can be flamboyant, classy luxurious comfortable and chic as well. The show presented an opportunity to spot Alek Wek in a recycled jacket and cotton pants designed by Ralph Rucci, Malin Ackerman in a black evening dress by Sue Stemp and Lindvall in a mini dress recycled from a former gown by DKNY. Recycled crepe, raffia, cotton and other organic fabrics made it to the star list for the evening. Other designers that got an opportunity to showcase and present their green designs were Vena Cava, Carmen Marc Valvo and Edun.
The 'Be Eco Chic' fashion show was indeed a significant and genuine effort towards displaying how green fashion can be achieved. The show organizers also made sure that the overall management of the show was in line with the theme. A large part of the set that had been created was donated to the theatre department in Montclair State University to minimize the carbon emissions likely from construction and lighting equipment. The holistic approach also involved serving appetizers.
While the actual event was a raging success, the awareness campaign that was designed around the event had a wider impact across the country. The campaign was supported by Johnson Beauty Care, Continental Airlines, Mercedes Benz, Lycra and PJ Madison's along with the Advisory board.
The coming together of the eco-friendly drive and chic fashion marks an era that will take green clothing and ensembles to greater heights.
